Causes of Motorcycle Accidents
According to
studies, nearly two-thirds of all motorcycle
accidents involving another vehicle are caused by the driver violating the
motorcycle’s right-of-way. When you consider that motorcyclists are 27 times
more likely to die in an accident than anyone in a passenger car, this
statistic becomes even more unsettling. Motorcycle accidents are almost always
devastating, often leading to life-altering injuries or wrongful death.
Apart from
right-of-way violation, some other common causes of motorcycle accidents
include:
- Sudden-stop
collisions – When
a car rear-ends a motorcycle, it can throw the rider forward off the bike and
cause them serious injury.
- Open door accidents – In busy urban areas,
motorcyclists must be cautious of parked cars on either side of the
street. However, sometimes the person inside a parked car does not see an
oncoming motorcycle and opens the car door directly into the biker’s
path.
- Poor road
conditions –
Because of their smaller build, and the fact that they only have two
wheels, motorcycles are more susceptible to skidding and sliding when they
hit uneven terrain. This means that grooves in the road, potholes, gravel,
and uneven pavement can easily lead to a motorcycle accident. If local
transportation authorities have failed to perform maintenance on roads to
keep them safe, they can potentially be held accountable for a
motorcyclist’s injuries.
