Diagnosing a Brain Injury in British Columbia
In some instances, a brain injury will
be apparent as soon as it occurs. However, some brain injuries do not produce
any immediate symptoms, which is one of the reasons you should seek medical
assistance following an accident even if you are not experiencing any
difficulties.
If you have sustained a blow to the head, your doctor may
use various scanning technologies to detect and diagnose a brain injury. These
include:
·
Computed tomography (CT)
·
Single-photon emission computerized tomography
(SPECT)
·
Positron emission tomography (PET)
·
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
·
Diffuse tensor imaging
In addition to these tests, your doctor may perform or order
a neuropsychological assessment.
If you are diagnosed with a brain injury, action must be
taken to help reduce further damage. This may include an induced coma, surgical
procedures, and life-support depending on the severity of your condition.
Following immediate medical intervention, long-term rehabilitation may be
necessary.
