• Contusion: A contusion is a bruise, or bleeding, in the brain. Contusions normally are a result of a direct impact or blow to the head.
• Penetration: A penetration occurs when a bullet, knife, or other sharp object impacts with the skull and sends fragments into the brain itself. These injuries often result in death. However, in some cases the victim is left with ability-impairing brain damage.

Along with these few examples of the different types of brain injury, there are also different levels of brain injury ranging from mild to severe.
