What is a Traumatic Brain Injury?
A traumatic brain injury, also referred to as TBI, is an injury that is sustained to the head which disrupts the function of the brain. It can happen from a jolt or blow to the head or penetration of the head by a foreign object. A traumatic brain injury can range from mild to severe. According to the Brain Injury Association of America, there are about 1.4 million people who are victims of traumatic brain injuries each year. Of those people, 50,000 of the injuries are fatal. The remainder of these people may be hospitalized, treated and released.
The most common causes of traumatic brain injuries are:
• Falling accidents, which account for approximately 28% of TBI injuries
• Motor vehicle accidents, which account for 20% of brain injuries
• People being struck by or against objects, accounting for 19% of these injuries
• Assaults, which account for 11% of brain injuries
Traumatic brain injuries can range from mild to severe. Some mild brain injury symptoms include:
• Mild headaches
• Tiredness or fatigue
• Memory loss
• Inability to focus or concentrate
• Problems sleeping
• Dizziness or loss of coordination
• Seizures
Severe brain injury symptoms can include:
• Severe headaches
• Attention, memory, or concentration problems
• Loss of vision
• Seizures
• Slurred speech
• Depression or irritability
